“Are you serious? I can take this bike home with me? Really?” That was 8-year old Leah’s initial response when she joined 42 other children from our Salvation Army Orange County social service programs recently at a bicycle giveaway. Thanks to Team Building Plus and Sprouts Farmers Markets, 43 children received brand new bicycles as part of a day-long team building seminar for Sprouts.

Throughout the day over 400 Sprouts employees were divided into teams and worked through various team building activities to “earn” parts which would ultimately lead them into building a new bicycle. At the end of the day, the children ran into the grand ballroom to receive their bikes. Each bike was ready to roll and decorated. The employees were just as surprised and thrilled as was Leah and the other children. “I think building the bikes and presenting them to the kids brought more joy to our team than to the kids!  It was definitely the highlight and a very humbling experience for every person in that room,” noted Sprouts Training Representative, Cindy Chikahisa.

Team Builders Plus coordinator Dolores Woodington said, "We love connecting our team building activities to meet tangible needs in the community, and we love The Salvation Army! It was wonderful to see the smiles on the children's faces when they received the bikes. Our friends from Sprouts really enjoyed the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of these children with the gift of a brand new bicycle."

Smiling from ear to ear, Leah was still processing the gift of the bike. “Please tell me you aren’t kidding me? Thank you so much!” Indeed, thank you Sprouts and Team Builders Plus!
