SALVATION
ARMY SEEKS EMERGENCY SHELTER SPACE IN
ORANGE COUNTY
The Salvation
Army wants to provide additional emergency shelter space in
Orange County. "We are actively looking at locations
for much needed emergency shelter space for women and children.
We will continue to push for increased housing services for
the homeless," states Major Lee Lescano, Salvation Army
Orange County Coordinator.
There
is a serious shortage of emergency housing. "It is estimated
that there are more than 19,000 homeless individuals on any
given night in Orange County," reports Beverly Freeman,
Director of Social Services for The Salvation Army Orange
County.
The Salvation
Army currently provides one of two emergency shelters that
are available in Orange County for women, children and families.
Doug Freeman, Shelter Services Coordinator, says "that
in a typical one-month period, the Hospitality House in Santa
Ana serves 3,720 sit down meals and 1,800 brown bag meals.
Last month 90 families including 270 children ages 0-16 were
assisted." However, over a two-month period the Hospitality
House turned away nearly 900 individuals. There is a great
need to provide emergency housing assistance that at present
cannot be met.
