With Santa Ana winds blowing at hurricane strengths, wildfires have swept across Southern California. Responding to this crisis, The Salvation Army is providing food, water and comfort to firefighters, police and others affected by the blaze.
As far south as San Diego, Salvation Army mobile feeding units (canteens) are on the scene to bring water and food, first aid, fresh socks, as well as emotional and spiritual comfort to first responders. In addition, mobile feeding units are serving meals at evacuation centers at Qualcomm Stadium, Mira Mesa High School, Escondido High School, Campo Community Center and Lakeside Rodeo Grounds/Hanson Ranch.
In Orange County, a Salvation Army canteen is on site at Irvine Park where staff and volunteers are serving meals to first responders at the Irvine fires. According to the Orange County spokesperson, the canteen will remain at Irvine Park for as long as it is needed. Salvation Army social services workers in Orange County are helping displaced families and individuals with needed emergency assistance.
In Los Angeles County, where fires continue to burn in Malibu Canyon, Santa Clarita, and other areas, Salvation Army Emergency Disaster personnel remain on standby, ready to respond when requested by County authorities.
Update:
Currently, Divisional Headquarters in Los Angeles has sent 4 canteens to the San Diego fire area to support relief efforts there. They have delivered 300 cots and more than 3,000 personal comfort kits. This has resulted in thousands of dollars worth of supplies having left our warehouses. Many people have been contacting The Salvation Army asking how they can help. One of the most important ways anyone can help is to click on this donation link and help replenish our supplies so that we can always remain ready when the need occurs.
